The weight of a women's sweater is about 250g, while a men's sweater weighs about 300g, depending on size and length. Of course, the weight varies greatly depending on the size and length of the garment. 12-gauge is the normal thickness of a sweater, but 7-gauge and 5-gauge sweaters are much heavier. This is just a guideline.

The smallest unit of yarn purchase is 1 kg, which is not limited to cashmere yarn, but also wool, cotton, and other materials in 1 kg rolls (called cones).
Both sellers and buyers always check the “lot”. A lot is a unit or a grouping of yarns that have been made (spun), and each yarn always has a spinning lot number on it. If you do not match the lot number, you will be in trouble.

For wool and cotton yarns, the lot number at the time of dyeing is basically important, but for cashmere, the lot number at the time of spinning is the final lot number because cashmere is spun after being dyed by wadding (top-dyeing).
For expensive yarns like cashmere, the minimum lot size is 30 to 50 kg. The largest lots are spun in quantities of 200 kg. This is a lot, and there is no color difference within a lot. The most annoying thing about different lots is the difference in color. Even if you compare the yarns (cones), you cannot tell the difference at all, and even if you are careless and start knitting with yarns from different lots because they are the same color, the human eye can still tell the subtle differences. The human eye is amazing.

Let's say you knit three sweaters, each of which weighs 300g. In this case, 1Kg is enough, but when the same lot is finished with this cone of yarn, you cannot use the remaining 100g of yarn to knit another sweater with a different lot of yarn. You can't knit an angel stole either, as each one costs 120g. You can't even return them (of course!). So I am waiting for a chance to use them as part of a color scheme or to make a small item, but small cones are accumulating.

At UTO, we do not include the loss of yarn from different lots in the cost, and the price of a sweater is calculated based on the actual cost of the sweater, so we have to do something about this leftover yarn. The highest quality raw material, 1 kg of which costs tens of thousands of yen. It would be a waste if we could not use it because of the difference in lot size. We had to somehow convert the precious and expensive cashmere into cash, so we put our heads together and came up with the “Various Colored Angel Stole”.
I connect the small pieces of yarn left over into a single strand and wind it up into a cone, imagining the color and quantity of yarn to be used for the finished product. The participants are looking forward to seeing what color threads will be left and how many colors will be left and what color combinations will be possible.

The wound yarn is then knitted into a stole, just like the angel stole. Naturally, the colors will change along the way, and the joints will appear in the middle of the knitted fabric. Many people do not mind, but the principle of UTO's border and yarn change is “knitting edge”, so we cannot offer it as a proprietary product.
